Date:  13 February 2008

Labor Senator Trish Crossin was today sworn in as the first female from the NT to be a member of a Federal Government.

Being elected last November as part of a Rudd Labor Government, today’s start at Parliament witnesses the Territory’s first female representative in Government.

Senator Crossin was appointed to the Senate in 1998 and has been re-elected four times. She became the first female from the NT to sit in the Senate, although until now, in opposition.

“One of the reasons I became interested in politics was to increase the number of women who were elected to Parliament.

“My achievement today proves that with support and encouragement, it is still possible to reach your goals.

“The Territory is a place that provides endless opportunities and can still ensure there are events in history to be written.

“Today’s milestone is due to the support I have received from party members, my family and friends in the NT and interstate, and the constituents across the Territory and Christmas and Cocos Islands.

“As a ‘working mum’ I wanted to ensure that issues affecting families such as work/life balance, health, education and cost of living were at the forefront of policy.

“The election of a federal Labor Government provides this opportunity and I am incredibly privileged to represent the Territory as this is achieved,” said Senator Crossin.

This historic event is coupled with the very first “Welcome to Country” ceremony to open parliament in our Federation’s 107 year history.
