Date:  11 February 2009

Senator Trish Crossin has welcomed the opening of the childcare centre at Parliament House which has been named Capital Hill Early Childhood Centre.

This centre, which is licensed for up to 25 children aged between 6 weeks and 18 months old, ensures that mums and dads at the House have access to childcare which is convenient and comforting to their young babies.

While the decision and plans to build this centre has been more than 10 years in the making, its opening today ensures that this work place now provides a balance to families and their work and supports breast feeding mums.

"A childcare centre at Parliament House has been a long time coming," Senator Crossin said.

"By having the centre located on Parliament House grounds, it encourages mothers to breastfeed, which has proven benefits for both mother and baby.

"The operational hours of the childcare centre increase during sitting weeks, allowing for more flexibility for workers during the busier periods.

"This recognises Parliament House as a modern workplace, helping parents balance their work and family commitments. It completes this work community and certainly makes it easier for people who come to work with their baby in their arms - sharing the same building."
