On 12 March 2008, the Senate referred the Rights of the Terminally Ill (Euthanasia Laws Repeal) Bill (the Bill) to the Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs for inquiry and report.
The Bill is a private senator’s bill introduced by Senator Bob Brown. The Bill proposes to repeal the Euthanasia Laws Act 1997 to allow the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory and Norfolk Island to make legislation for people who are terminally ill.
The Chair of the Committee, Senator Trish Crossin, announced that the Committee is now seeking submissions to the inquiry, and hopes to receive input from a wide range of groups and individuals.
The closing date for submissions is Wednesday 9 April 2008. Public hearings will be held in Darwin, Sydney and Melbourne in April, commencing on April 14.
