Fair Work Bill Brings Fairness Back To Australian Workplaces

Rudd Government rids Australia of Work Choices against the intense opposition of the Liberals.

Date:  20 March 2009

Territory working families can now breathe a sigh of relief as the Rudd Government rids Australia of Work Choices against the intense opposition of the Liberals, said Senator Crossin.

Working with the Greens and the two independent Senators, the Rudd Labor Government has delivered on their promise to create a new fair and balanced workplace relations system.

The passing of the Fair Work Bill shows what can be achieved when people who oppose the disgraceful Work Choices laws and are committed to fairness and balance in Australian workplaces work together.

"This legislation is a result of what Territorians voted for at the last election - a fair and balanced workplace relations system, and the death of Work Choices," said Senator Trish Crossin

"The Your Rights at Work campaign in the Territory brought people from union and non-union backgrounds together to fight for their rights in their workplace, which has just been passed into law."

Although declaring on March 5 that "Work Choices is dead", the Liberal Leader and his party did all they could to stand in the way of getting rid of Work Choices.

They refused to recognise that the Australian public did not want a system which undercut their wages, condition and rights in the workplace.

"The Liberals failed to come to the table with new or original ideas and are now consigned to the political fringes where their extreme workplace laws have always been," said Senator Crossin.

"Perhaps Senator Scullion should explain to Territorian families why he was keen to hang on to the threads of Work Choices despite the fact that it undermined workers conditions, their rights, and made it easier for the boss to sack them."
