Refurbishments totalling $1,321,309 was officially opened today at St Mary’s Primary School by Senator Trish Crossin.
The capital works being opened involved the refurbishment of student amenities, canteen and classrooms, and the construction of a shade structure in the courtyard.
This year also marks 100 years since the school was opened, and is the oldest Catholic co-educational primary school in Darwin.
“These outstanding facilities will help ensure all students at St Mary’s Primary School are encouraged to realise their full potential and attain their goals”.
Senator Crossin officially opened the new facilities on behalf of the Australian Government Minister for Education, the Hon Julia Gillard MP.
Senator Crossin congratulated the school and its community on establishing the best possible facilities for their students.
The projects were funded by the Australian Government under the Capital Grants Program $799,994, the Investing in Our Schools Program $119,000, the State Government $88,000 and the school community fundraised $314,315.
Senator Crossin said the project demonstrated the Australian Government’s commitment to providing every student with the best possible learning environment through the provision of these new/updated facilities.
The Australian Government provides significant funding under the Capital Grants Program ( CGP) to support the construction and upgrading of schools in partnership with state and territory governments, non government school authorities and school communities, which have primary responsibility for providing, maintaining and upgrading their school facilities.
Under the Australian Government Capital Grants Program over $436 million is being provided in 2008 for school capital projects. Of this, almost $127 million will be provided for state and territory non-government schools.
