Date: 31 August 2009
Senator Trish Crossin has today welcomed the opening of the Outback Highway Development Council Inc (OHDC) office which will house the new Council General Manager, located in Alice Springs, helping to further develop Australia's Longest Shortcut - the Outback Way.
The OHDC was established to set up a "third strategic link" through central Australia which would bring economic, social and cultural benefits to the regions along the highway.
The Office will be home to the new General Manager for the OHDC (jointly funded by the 7 shires that the highway passes through), who will be responsible for the development of the tourism route, lobbying for continual road development, the financial and administrative management of the OHDC and seeking new opportunities for the development of the Outback Way.
The Outback Highway stretches from Laverton in Western Australia through Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, to Winton in Queensland, totalling 2,750kms, which includes 1,850kms of unsealed road.
"The Outback Highway is a great way to see the outback, and brings much needed economic and social benefits to this isolated region," Senator Crossin said.
"It is the longest tourist 'adventure' route in the nation, as well as being a vital road link for the many remote communities on the way."
