The Federal Government is rolling out free Swine Flu vaccinations across the country this week.

Date:  28 September 2009

Senator Trish Crossin is urging Territorians to get immunised against Swine Flu, as the Federal Government rolls out free vaccinations across the country this week.

This will be the single biggest mass immunisation program in Australia's history, with 21 million doses of the vaccine ordered.

"While Swine Flu can be a mild disease for many people, it can have severe outcomes on the most vulnerable," Senator Crossin said.

"The aim of the mass immunisation is to have sufficient immunity within the community to prevent the flu from spreading easily, especially if it returns in a more virulent form."

A separate vaccination for children under 10 years is currently going through paediatric trials to ensure the dose is correct for children and that there are no complications. The Australian Government expects the results from these trials in late October, with the vaccination expected to be rolled out soon after.

"I urge those most vulnerable, in particular those with chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease and cancer, to contact your local GP for more information," Senator Crossin said.

Vaccines will be available from Wednesday, 30 September, for those aged 10 years and over. People are being advised to tell their GP that they want a vaccination when they make their appointment, to ensure GPs have the vaccine available.

For more information the public should contact the National Hotline Swine Influenza Information 180 2007 or the NT Centre for Disease Control on 8922 8044.
