Working Territorians will be looking forward to fairness with the Rudd Government introducing the new industrial relations legislation, the Fair Work Bill, into parliament – effectively smashing the former Government’s Work Choices regime.
The Fair Work Bill delivers on the Government’s policy, Forward with Fairness, which was released prior to the last election.
The Fair Work Bill is the result of the work of hundreds of Territorians who campaigned tirelessly during last years election, to bring back their rights to the workplace.
“The Fair Work Bill is the Rudd Government in action, delivering on its election promise to tear up Work Choices,” Senator Crossin said
“The Bill enshrines in law the right to enterprise bargaining, and protects freedom of association. It also re-introduces unfair dismissal rights to the vast majority of employees, and provides an opportunity for low paid workers to enter the bargaining system.
“It is underpinned by the 10 National Employment Standards, which is a comprehensive safety net for every employee that cannot be stripped away or overridden,” Senator Crossin said.
The Fair Work Bill also replaces the Australian Industrial Relations Commission with Fair Work Australia, which brings together 7 existing agencies under the one banner.
“Work Choices were extreme and unfair workplace laws that Territorians rejected at the last election. The Fair Work Bill brings balance back into the workplace, for all Territorians,” Senator Crossin said.
