Date: 19 November 2009
Senator Trish Crossin and the Member for Solomon Damian Hale are pleased to announce that tenders have gone out for the Federal Government's $3 million funding upgrade to the Hidden Valley Drag Strip.
The Hidden Valley Motor Sport Complex is a high quality venue for motor sports.
The $3 million funding for upgrades is a 2007 Federal election commitment that will ensure the Hidden Valley Drag Strip meets national and international standards.
"These upgrades will make it possible for Darwin to be able to host the best Australian and International Drag Racing Teams," said Senator Crossin
Motor sport is one of the fastest growing sports in Australia - and this is no different in the NT.
Nearly 5,000 people attend local meets at Hidden Valley including the famous Beat the Heat off street competition.
"Hidden Valley Motor Sport Complex is an important sporting asset and drag racing makes a significant investment into Darwin's local automotive industry," Mr Hale said.
The Federal Government's $3 million upgrades include:
- · Resurfacing of the track to an international standard;
- · Upgrade safety barriers to concrete to cater for top class competition vehicles;
- · Construct a purpose built 'burnout pad' to use as a skid pan for driver training and to cater for young drivers;
- · Upgrade spectator mounds for better spectator safety and viewing areas.
Tenders will close on the 16th December 2009.
