Senator Trish Crossin has encouraged all Territorians to get involved and celebrate International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) on December 3rd.
Date: 03 December 2008
IDPwD is a worldwide annual event, celebrating the unique skills of people with disability and acknowledging the contributions and achievements of people with disability in our local communities by holding local events.
“People with disability make a significant contribution to the community, and International Day of People with Disability is a great opportunity to recognise this input,” Senator Crossin said.
“I encourage all Territorians to participate in the events happening in your community on December 3rd.”
On the eve of IDPwD, the Rudd Government tabled a draft Disability Standards for Access to Premises. This is part of the Rudd Government’s long term agenda to achieve better outcomes for people with disability and their families.
The Standards will help provide better access to new and upgraded public buildings for people with a disability, by making it clear what access is required to avoid discrimination.
The requirements of the Standards are to be mirrored in the Building Code of Australia, aligning building law and discrimination law.
“This ensures that people with a disability have better access to premises such as shops, government offices and hotels, making a positive impact on their daily lives.
“The Standards will make the rights of people with a disability more clearer and certain,” Senator Crossin said.
